Chesterfield Vets vs Chesterfield U-18 Vets. Lost 2-3
A veterans team, (mostly "vintage"), many of whom could give the youngsters 40 years, put up a brave performance against the young guns.
Despite going 3-0 down by the interval to two well taken goals and a third resulting from a rather fortunate decision against the veteran defenders, the old lags did not let their heads drop, nor their tiring legs let them down. Indeed, the youngsters had mostly defending to do in this second half, conceding two goals to the vets and only the post saving them from an almost certain 3rd goal.
Thanks to Chris Hubbard for "guesting" for the vets in place of Gary McC and to Nick Roberts, playing his first game in over two years, swapping umpiring with the injured Bob Battye.
Read beyond the photos below for one youngster's view of the game.
Josh Brocklehurst, who was given the role of match photographer by Keith Marriott after he'd taken the team photos, succeeded in posing well round the pitch, but failing to press the shutter release button! Hence, our only photos are of the teams:

Note that Josh Briggs and Ash both managed to pull the same face on all the
team photos!
Plus a pre-match pose from Ash and Nick:
….and a view from Ben …..
A cold Saturday morning saw the thirds desperate for players, Callum happened to be one of them, coincidently Callum and many others were needed during the Vets v U18. Was this a plan hatched by Neil and his co-oldies to tire us out?
As the time drew nearer, you could see the Chesterfield stadium filling; at half time it was announced that a club record had been broken during this particular game, as the overall attendance had exceeded the amount of 20 spectators.
It was also acknowledged that the veterans had a average of "40" years on the youngsters, suspected ringers were entered into the vets team no names given (Hubbard) and the average age had dramatically dropped from 50 years to approximately 35-40, even the skill rating within the team varied and many of these players were good in their ‘hey-day’ or present time, they were no match for chesterfield up and coming. (Editors’ note …. One ringer did not reduce the average age that significantly …. It was still circa 50)
I am however one to admit certain people in the Vets team did give us tips on how to control the game and not to be controlled, it did also help us with many players and spectators helping us all the way pointing out certain players’ weak points. Should the oldies have paid more attention on our weak points, which I am one to admit have a few, they could have gained the upper hand on us and the score could have been a different story.
Throughout the match gaps were found in the teams and chances were thrown in every direction to both teams - Mac seemed to have an open net and failed to get a touch in the ball; at times Harry Swift was giving Neil a hard time with every chance being denied by Harry; within 17 minutes frustration was showing on Neil’s face and didn’t mean good news for Ben, no sympathy was being shown. However, sympathy was supposedly being shown on our keeper, Tom Walters, this was his first adult type game for him and he held on to everything he could reach, he denied many shots on goal but conceded two which he couldn’t be and wasn’t blamed for.
Three spectacular goals saw the young guns win the game, all deflections and assisted by Daniel Molloy.
An actor had joined our team and showed us how to dive without a swimming pool in front (this was performed by a professional and I can’t hesitate DON’T TRY THIS AT HOME! Concussion can be a consequence).
Josh Briggs was one of the two scorers with two of them ending his season with five goals against his name; Ash Higgingbottom was the other scorer ending his season also with five goals against his name.
Mark Boardman made an appearance for the team and clearly proved 3 months of injuries doesn’t change the skill of the player, you would not have even noticed he had been injured until he went off the pitch.
Nick Drew played an awesome game and his role as sweeper was clearly needed during some stages of the game.
Nick Kennerly clearly showed his skill and proved his nickname was still active he is the hockey God.
Well done to captain Callum - he co-organised this game and also went home with the shirts, he managed to confuse the team including himself (no change) but sometimes the effort he puts into the runs can often make chances happen, also thanks to him for co-organising this match and if he wasn’t captain this match might not have happened and the old-uns might not have realised that the juniors are better than them and will be until proven otherwise next year.

v Burton 3rd Won 6-2 (Phillips 4, Higgenbottom, Knapp)
Mid table Chesterfield took on 3rd from bottom Burton in this ‘meaningless’ end of league clash. The only significance was whether Andy could overtake Mixo’s 19 goals.
Against a weak Burton side the odds were in his favour.
Burton however started the stronger. They had many chances to finish the game off in the first half. Chesterfield made the mistake of playing predominantly on the left side leaving their main play makers on the right interested spectators. The Chesterfield defence was also keen on giving away the ball to Burton in good attacking positions. Poor and inaccurate shooting was Burton’s downfall.
The switching of the ball to the right finally allowed Chesterfield to have a purple patch where they scored 3 goals in a space of 2 minutes. Some good work from J Cluer and Callum resulted in a penalty corner of which Knapp fooled the goal keeper with a mistimed shot, 1-0. Andy Phillips then got on the score sheet with a well hit shot past the lethargic Burton goalkeeper, 2-0. The resultant roar of ‘I have won the trophy’ made the watching first team spectators sick and left the Burton players confused. The facially challenged ‘pot bellied’ specimen in front of them, with not enough pace to scare even a vintage player did not seem to have the physical attributes of an ace striker!
The second half started in the same vein. Burton’s poor finishing continued. Good defending by Fisher and some excellent reflex saves by ‘Pingu’ kept Burton at bay.
Chesterfield went 4-0 up when Andy Phillips scored with a sweet hit off a penalty corner. This was quickly reduced to 4-2 with two quick goals from Burton who finally got the Chesterfield goal in their sights.
With Chesterfield tiring and Burton on the attack the outcome was still in doubt until another piecing run by JC resulted in a goal mouth melee for Phillips to get a well earned hat trick. Another hit by Andy from the top of the ‘D’ completed his quartet.
Final score 6-2.
Man of the Match: AP – won the contest with his vote.
**** Of the Day: Doc – AP’s vote for the AWOL Doc proved crucial – ‘had he played I would have scored at least 10 goals’!!!
Chesterfield ended their campaign with a creditable and safe 6th place.
vs Nottingham Drew 2-2 (Newman (2))
....report from Ben .....
A sunny Saturday afternoon set the scene for the following events. We lost
the likes of three very important aspects of the team, Garry Hunter, Neill
Briggs and his son Josh. This left us a few players short on the Friday, many
other players also had other arrangements for the final 4's game of the
season, Chris Hubbard and Tom Young being two of them. As the 5's had
finished the season earlier than everyone else, many players were available
and the problem of not having enough players was solved, a jet-lagged Les
Hawketts was called up late Friday Night along with Nick Kennerly and a few
others, Johno Hodgson was also playing for the 4's after making a swap with
Gareth Hunter earlier on in the week. This team which was struggling to make
11 players was now left with thirteen. The trip up to Nottingham's ground was
a short journey, this Saturday afternoon however was no longer sunny, the sun
had disappeared and left an icy cold wind approaching us on all four sides of
the pitch.
The game started with Johno and Ben sat on the bench with them both counting down each long and cold 60 seconds, gaps were forming in the team and Nottingham managed to break through during the first 20 minutes, a tired Ian Gleardell managed to deny Nottingham the few chances they were given. Seventeen minutes were up and Ben was stripped down to his shorts and t-shirt waiting for Les to end the impact he made on the team, the first half seemed to be a good half for Les who was putting 100% into the game and this showed with the great tackles and wonderful balls he managed to make to Brendan in particular. Ben walked on the pitch ready for anything that was put in front of him, he didn’t, however, expect that to be a goal to the opposing team. Comments were made my many Chesterfield defenders, the umpire was in clear view of the ball at all times, but the ball apparently was one foot at least past the by-line before the ball was snuck into the back of our net, just like that it was 1-0 to Nottingham, an unhappy keeper and an unhappy Johny Mac is a side Nottingham do not want to get on, some say he turns green whens he’s angry. Brilliant through balls were made by Nick Drew and Chris Markus and chances were made the Nottingham defence had finally been disrupted.
A few minutes later our secret weapon approached the pitch, Johno, this player was someone the Nottingham players have met before but last time was nobody compared to the vast improvement this player has made throughout the last year.
All well and good you might think but this was when the 1-0 score line doubled, our keeper had committed himself to the ball and failed, Nottingham managed to slip the ball under him leaving an open net and Johny Mac in the middle of it. Johnny had no other option but to stop the ball with his feet not once but twice, this led to a flick the tension rose our support was behind Ian but the player managed to flick the ball into the left side of the goal. Was this a sign for Ben and Johno were we caught off our mark whilst swapping around?
After the first 25 minutes breaks were made and shorts were given words were said between and Nick and Danny Newman and a plan had been hatched, which pulled off the ball was slapped out by Johno to Nick and then passed to Danny who converted it into a goal, this goal was eagerly needed and afterwards the morale of the team had risen with the team winning another two shorts, both of which went wide, the first was a close second for Newman, and the second chance was a lack of communication between both Johno and Ben. Half Time.
The five-minute team talk consisted of the fact we could win this; the gaps were showing in the defence.
A topic had formed between Ben and Nick who discussed whether Nick's stick was a woman's stick or not and whether it really mattered.
The team talk from Mick and Nick really influenced many players and the attacks were very strong and great balls from Mick Rowan were made to upset the oppositions defence. Defence seemed stronger too not many chances for Nottingham made it to the 25-yard line. Another short was given and this one was also converted by Newman to give him his second. After that the game became a non-stop game very fast and very tiring and no arguing.
The post match food was not very popular for the youngsters but was devoured by the adults.

vs Mansfield Won 6-2 (R Anderson (4), P Evans (2)
Things did not bode well for Chesterfield against the 2nd placed team in the league. The team gathered in the Goosedale changing room with a Rob Anderson who had clearly enjoyed his works party the previous night a little too much. And then Josh dropped his bombshell, "Lads I have forgotten the shirts". A massive thankyou to Mrs Evans for then delivering said shirts, which were unfortunately still in the Brocklehursts washer. So a slightly damp Emerald Army took to the pitch. Against all odds Chesterfield started superbly and dominated preceedings.
Mansfield struggled to thread passes together and were constantly outmuscled for possession despite the significant size of their midfield. Josh 'Raging Bull' Brocklehurst in particular was a man inspired with a point to prove after his kit debacle. Against the run of play Mansfield took the lead after a break down their right left Matt Lloyd and CJ hopelessly exposed. No Chesterfield heads dropped though as Rob Anderson soon got the away team back into the game with a clinical finish. At half time Chesterfield were 2-1 following a Pat Evans reverse flick following a short corner scramble, and were still looking much the better side.
During the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half Mansfield tried to press and Chesterfield successfully weathered the storm. Mansfield failed to convert any of their short corners, and Chesterfield extended their lead through Anderson and Evans again. Mansfield scored what turned out to be a consolation goal to make it 4-2 but Anderson continued his Midas ways and buried another 2 to hammer the nails in the Mansfield coffin. A big thankyou also to the 3rd team who gave great support when they arrived.
A great performance considering the players missing and the opposition, and definately one of the highlights of an up and down season.
Now if someone can just fill in my blanks about Paddy's Night at the Manor that would be greatly appreciated.
vs Coventry & North Warwicks. Won 2-1(Neale-Eyre, Dyson)
vs Nottingham 3rds Lost 11-1(Tann)
Chesterfield 3rds took on high fliers Nottingham 3rds on a lovely sunny afternoon and received a roasting at the appropriately named Goosedale. With 3rd team members either away on holiday or stepping up to the 2nds it was surprising that the captain was able to put out a team.
4th Team heavyweights C H, G H and J K along with vintage 5th team player BigMac were drafted in to help. Teenager Jonno as the short corner runner was on a sharp learning curve.
Our new look back four with a combined tonnage fit to challenge any English scrum were allegedly heavily bribed (usually a kebab and a pint of Guinness is enough!) to make the young Nottingham studs look good in front of their watching girlfriends. Having suitably explained how we let in 11 goals (believe that and you will believe anything), I can now proceed to give you the other highlights of the day.
Highlight 1 – quote of the day/year by our Skipper “this lot does not score many goals!”
Highlight 2 – the now infamous Chesterfield huddle where the team shouted “WIN” at halftime. (We were already 0-5 down!)
Highlight 3 – the ‘freebie’ ‘Lucky’ wristbands provided at the start of the match by ex skipper AP obviously worked – it could have been worse!
Highlight 4 – the ‘I put my life on the line save’ by J K. In truth this part time Sumo wrestler was unable to get out of the way from a Notts shot at goal and received a sore head for his troubles. Who said his head could not get any bigger!
Highlight 5 – Chesterfield’s goal – our only goal. After a rare Notts attack that failed, a first time pass by Mike G to our geriatric central midfielder saw him ease pass Jan - where many a more illustrious team-mate had failed. A sprint (by his standards) half the length of the field (Ok - 30yards!), was followed by a square pass to Tann to score well into the vacant goal.
Highlight 6 – having being soundly thrashed by one of the strongest teams we have faced so far, the team did a ‘Freddie Flinttoff without the pedalo’ and ‘celebrated’ at a local pub.
Man of the Match (for Nott’s). – Our skipper – for assisting Nott’s promotion by selecting a ‘weak’ team.
**** Of the Day (for Chesterfield) – our skipper - the buck has to stop somewhere!

vs Olton & West Warwicks Won 4-2 (Clifford (2), Bointon, Grant)
vs Loughborough Town Lost 0-1
vs Warwick University 3rds- Won 2-1 (Nash (2))
We had been soundly trashed 0-8 in the away leg and against promotion contenders Warwick this was always going to be a tough match. The clubs top scorer and centre forward AP declared himself unfit. However unable to stay away he coached of the Staveley ladies 6th team instead! The huge vacuum created by his absence was filled up the experienced Nash. CW made another attempt to make it 3 consecutive games for the 3rds and our Irish import was dropped in favour of youngsters ‘I should be in the first team’ – Callum, and Johno making their 3rd team debuts. Nick Kennerley back from injury was another welcome reinforcement.
On a sunny spring day, Chesterfield took the fight to the young university stars who were on the back foot for most of the first half. With Nash holding up the ball, and distributing well the Chesterfield forwards created many chances. The tireless running of Cowley who chased everything and the unorthodox technique of CW made life difficult for the Warwick defenders. Our forwards were however thwarted by the ‘water buffalo like’ Warwick goalkeeper who hardly showed any daylight between himself and his goal. Chris finally scored off a penalty corner but the honest Chesterfield side reversed the umpire’s decision by pointing that the high indirect shot had been a first shot at goal. Against the run of play Warwick scored off a short corner – the Chesterfield defence caught napping off a simple routine. 0-1 at half time.
On restart Chesterfield almost scored when a quick pass to Cowley caught the young Warwick stars ball watching. Chesterfield continued to attack and had chances to equalize. Tireless running by our midfield and defence kept their speedy attacks at bay. The skipper made good use of our substitutes. Words of wisdom by injured AP from the sidelines encouraged our youngsters to chase every ball down. Young Callum was outstanding and deservedly won the man of the match award. Chesterfield finally equalized when Nash scored off a short corner 1-1. With both teams going for victory Chesterfield looked the stronger and deservedly scored again. This time one of Nash’s less powerful pushes squeezed through the legs of the Warwick goalkeeper, 2-1. The Warwick team was unable to find the equalizer. Tony, Fisher and ‘Worsty’ were outstanding in defence.
This was an excellent result to reverse our last loss – though this was not the same Warwick side previously encountered. The performances of the youngsters were encouraging.
Man of the Match – Callum – an excellent debut and allowed his hockey to do his talking!

vs Lichfield 3rds Lost 2-1 (K. Tann)
A weakened Chesterfield side took on in form Lichfield without the club’s leading scorer who reluctantly had to attend his sister’s wedding. ‘Ace Physio’ Tann collapsed in a heap a minute into play with a back spasm. In spite of playing with 10 men for the first 10 to 15 minutes Chesterfield dominated the first half but missed countless chances to go in 0-0 at half time. The second half started in similar vein. We were unlucky to see the ball hit the post and the Lichfield keeper make a reflex save. A Lichfield defensive lapse allowed Tom Young to steal the ball. He passed to Cowley who drew the goalkeeper out and passed to the unmarked Tann to push the ball into a vacant net. 1-0. Having spurned further opportunities to increase the lead, Chesterfield then let Lichfield back into the game via a short corner, 1-1. As Chesterfield tired and began to make mistakes in defence Lichfield went 2-1 up through a penalty flick. Chesterfield tried hard to equalize but lady luck deserted them.
Man of the match – Tann – the fasted man with a limp.
**** Of the day – AP
Team chauffeurs – Hoops, Neil and Gary.

SUNDAY - vs Mansfield 3rds Lost 3-2 (Cowley, Walters)
2 games within 24 hours proved too much for the Dad’s army and after an awful first half they found themselves 3-0 down. A valiant fight back in the last 20 minutes brought the score to 3-2. With Mansfield on the rack, Chesterfield had further chances to score but lady luck once again deserted them. With the weekend results going their way Chesterfield have confirmed their safety in this division. This gives the captain a golden opportunity to inject fresh blood and young legs into the team – especially in midfield!
Man of the match – Cowley was the best of the worst.
**** Of the day – Craig Walters – was the worst of the rest.
Team chauffeurs – Hoops, Neil and Walters.

vs Loughborough Town Lost 1-3 (Hunter)
The home team feared a difficult game when they saw a predominantly young a fit visiting side warm up. Kay, Hunter and Pendleton exercised their voices in lieu of too physical a warm-up.
However, once the game started, it became clear that Chesterfield could win this game. They had a number of chances, particularly from penalty corners, but could not convert. Josh Briggs was also unfortunate not to connect with an excellent cross to him at the top of the "D".
At half time, the scores were level, 1 each.
The second half showed a brisk start for Loughborough. Chesterfield were slow to come to terms, particularly in defence. Whilst Loughborough did not have that many chances to score, they did convert two of those chances to go 3-1 up by near the end of the game.
Chesterfield could not capitalise on their opponents being reduced to 10 men (yellow card for verbals following a green card for an awful tackle). Indeed, they themselves were guilty of a number of excessively hard tackles and too much in the way of verbal complaints, resulting in two green cards, Hunter and Pendleton. The continual complaining and carping on about tackles and decisions by a few does nothing to help the team gel together and produce their best performance.
The home team missed the penetrating runs of Kevin Tann; this combined with the inablity to covert the corners, were major contributory factors in the defeat.
On the positive side though, young Jonno had an excellent game.
Callum's view:
I was the first 4th teamer there at 11.45 for a 12 meet. I was shocked to see our oppostion there doing drills and warming up - they had been here since 11! This made me wary of them as these were very eager. Our next player arrived at 12 then people started turning up finally at 12.25 we had all the team.
We started strongly but a quick break and a goalkeeping error cost us the first goal. But i can confidently say for the first time in the second half of the season our heads did not drop and we battled having 6-7 short corners nearly converted. We realised we had to make it count and Chris Markus passed the ball into the D to Hunter who slotted the ball home.
The 2nd half was POOR. I can confidently say we were all over the place, but we managed to keep the score as it was for a long time until our defence was breached twice in the final 15 minutes.
We need to pull things together to maintain our place in this league as relegation is on the horizon.
v Belper 8ths was a 0 -2 win. Scorers B Molloy 1, Drew 1 (Sat game)
vs Barton 4ths Won 2-1 (Callum Taylor, Chris Markus) (Sunday game)
We met at Brampton Manor at 9.30 for an 11 start. The team we were playing were at the bottom of the league and we knew that the teams above us were playing each other so a win would take us first or second. We started off pushing forward and dominating but they caught us on the break and got the first goal. We had loads of penalty corners and were getting closer each one, finally when Mac had an empty net to fire into, he propelled it towards the goal but Callum snatched it at the last moment. This goal wouldn't have counted if the umpire had been able to see, as Callum had used his back of his stick, however, the goal stood. We carried on dominating but could not find the net.
In the 2nd half, Barton were all over us for the first 20 minutes and after a hat full of mistakes by Pingu we had a kick up the bum. Callum layed the ball into the D to set up Chris for another goal. Barton then made a sub with a shirt that had the same number on as the other (Ringer) but as he was the central figure we stopped him having the ball for long periods and managed to scrape a win.
After the match the food was great - hot dog and chips with beans - but the free pool was even better. As Pingu was called up last minute Saturday night he wouldn't have to pay subs untill Callum helped him win 29 pounds on the bandit. When Pingu refused to give Callum some of it, Callum told Mac, and Pingu payed up!
(Callum)
vs Nottingham University (H) Won 3-1 (McCormick, Clifford, Anderson)
vs Melton (A) lost 5 - 1. Scorer D Molloy
v Northampton Lions 3rds Won 13-0(Phillips 5, Nash 3, Cluer 3 Cowley 2).
The Chesterfield heavyweights turned out a ‘regal’ performance to crush the Lions and confirm their safety in this division. Chesterfield was at full strength with John and Chris back for this home game. CW (Craig) who has made more comeback appearances than Johnny Wilkinson retained his place when our ‘lucky’ Irish import received a late call up to taste Melton’s pork pies. Astute colleagues (unnamed to maintain domestic harmony) were quick to note that the Lions were not at full strength – their female umpire had failed to make the trip!
The first half was noteworthy for the number of chances the marauding green army created. Some excellent saves from the young Lion goalkeeper kept the score decent at half time (5-0). The highlight of the first half was an Andy Murray lob into goal by Andy Phillips. With the Chesterfield team queuing up near goal for a pass into a vacant goal the only way AP could add to his tally was with a lob. Having failed in practice he turned out to be 101st time lucky! Other more worthy highlights were the near misses by Nash from penalty corners and a Tim Henman lob by CW that failed.
Chesterfield dominated the second half and began scoring at will. Super sub Nash (in spite of testing the perimeter fence from all angles) and J Cluer collected hat tricks. Cowley managed a couple – one a clever deflection from an excellent pass by Ashley.
The Lions were literally rolled over in the face of dominant opposition. Our strong Chesterfield defense (once again Andy Fisher, Tony, Worsty and Barney were outstanding) allowed them just one shot at goal.
The ‘pride’ of Northampton was left nursing their wounds. Rather than stay for the nutritious post match meal of soup and bread they made a quick retreat down the M1 with their tails between their legs!
We thank Messieurs Owen and Bloxham for allowing the game (and goals) to flow.
Man of the match – J Cluer was the deserved winner (AP and AF voted for themselves!).
**** Of the Day – the unanimous vote went to super sub John – for testing every bit of the perimeter fence above the Lion’s goal and then sending the match ball into orbit.

vs Telford (H) Lost 3-6 (A Bointon (2), A Clifford)
The preverbial 6 pointer Telford arrived at St Marys knowing that a loss for them would throw the title race wide open. A good crowd gathered in the low winter sun, and such were the numbers they had to be cordoned off to prevent potential crowd trouble. Telford got off to a dream start by winning 2 short corners in a row and burying both of them in the top corners leaving Meatloaf Lloyd no chance. The visitors quickly raced into a 3 goal lead following a sharp passing move which found an unmarked defender in the D to tap in an open net. After clearly losing his limited mental capacity Hartley was removed from the defence which seemed to tighten up the home side.
Chesterfield finally began to forge chances as they started to gain longer periods of possession, and Bosnich was a constant menace down both flanks. This pressure finally told in a short corner for Chesterfield which was drag-scooped in by Mixo. The Emerald Army then added a second following a clinical finish by Boints from close range as the ball fell kindly to him off the Telford keeper. A further glorious chance was squandered when Mixo opted to shoot from an impossible angle instead of squaring the ball back past the keeper.
So only one goal in it at half time. Chesterfield the 2nd half much the brighter side creating clear cut chance after clear cut chance. Mixo was guilty of missing 2 one on ones with the Telford keeper and Bointon tried his best to dislocate his entire upper body with a huge air shot. Then the inevitable happened as Chesterfield pressed for elusive goals and Telford ran in 2 goals in quick succession to kill the game off. Matt Lloyd then missed a bobbled hit to compount the home sides woes, and give Telford their 6th. But there was still time for a consolation flick from Boints who was made to take his flick a second time due to the first being too slow.
This result takes the dream of promotion further away, but with the top sides capable of beating each other there is still all to play for.
vs South Notts (A) Won 5-1 (A Glascott (3), M Rowan jnr, D Molloy)
vs Sutton Coldfield Draw 2-2 (Andy Phillips, Mark Fonseca)
The Chesterfield 3rds met 5th placed Sutton Coldfield on a warm winter’s morning with another new look side. Chris Cowley was away on athletic commitments and C Walters played for the 2nds. Ashley was moved to an unfamiliar right and Tom Young was on left wing. In the absence of C Hubbard, Neil played right back. The 3rds welcomed equine orthodontist and debutant Barney in midfield.
Chesterfield started brightly against a young energetic Sutton side. They deservedly took the lead when their expert poacher (and club top scorer – if he hasn’t told you already!), Andy Phillips ended a mini ping-pong game with the goalkeeper by finally smashing the ball into the net, 1-0. The Sutton side then settled and pressed for the equalizer. They threatened with quick counterattacks helped by poor man marking and lethargic defending. With our forwards and even sometimes the midfield treating our half as a ‘respect’ zone the Chesterfield goal came under sustained pressure. Man of the match Andy Fisher saved a certain goal with a goal line save. Sutton finally equalised when their unmarked forward was able to flick the ball into the net, 1-1 at half time.
The second half started with Chesterfield struggling with the basics. The tendency to pass to Sutton’s players in dangerous positions put our defence under pressure. Our Irish import often seemed to forget which team he was playing for! Andy Fisher did well with some last stand defending. The 3rds however had their chances. A Nash penalty corner hit was well saved by the Sutton goalkeeper and passes across the ‘D’ by J Cluer just failed the vital last touch. Chesterfield finally took the lead when young Tom did well to keep a penalty corner hit by Andy in play. As Sutton struggled to clear, the loose ball fell to Doc whose hit crept under the goalkeeper’s pads into goal. Reports of money changing hands after the game are totally untrue. Alleged reports of Andy making contact with the Mansfield (our next opponent’s) goalkeeper have however so far not been disproved!
With our defence well led by Andy Fisher (and intermittent support form the rest), the Chesterfield 3rds appeared to have saved the day. Then home umpire Keith intervened. His eagle eyes spotted an infringement that no one else had and Sutton were awarded a penalty corner. A superb hit in the left corner gave our goalkeeper and ‘postman’ no chance. 2-2.
Both sides tried hard to break the deadlock with no success. Chesterfield remains 6th.
Home umpires Keith and Mick receive our thanks for officiating the game. They even got votes for Man of the Match - believe this and you will believe anything!
Man of the Match – Andy Fisher for his goal line save and timely interventions.
**** Of the Day – – due to legal reasons I am unable to mention the names of the home umpires who having wrapped themselves in cotton wool will stand no questioning of their decisions – however so polite the question may be.

A very long journey was made hard when Pingu announced his car had broken - or maybe just he was worried about petrol . Therefore we had the problem of 4 in the back of Neil's car. Not too bad if it was just the young players but no, there was Pingu, Deej, Ben and me, Callum. This made it hard for me as I was laid with my head on Pingu wanting to be sick - but with 30 minutes to get there I managed to sit on Ben and hurt his legs. Deej tried to do the Andy Phillips way of life by taking the p**s out of mine, Ben's and Pingu's mums but nobody took offence as it was Deej. We finally got to the pitch eventually with 5 mins until push back.
We started off strongly and managed to break down the wing using the right hand side. But after the first two minutes, we lost that bit of momentum and were overpowered by their midfield and their umpires. They managed to score ,which if Pingu new how to move, would not have gone in. He was trapped between two decisions - kick with left or right - but instead moved neither foot and the ball trickled through his legs.
The second half was made hard when they got their 2nd goal and Josh Briggs let out his emotion, causing his Dad to sub him for the mighty boulder Deej. I already a green card to my name, however, when the umpire decided that, for somebody to manage to force Hunter off the ball with an open net it was a 16 yard hit, I expressed my displeasure and I received a yellow. Other than this, Sutton just pushed forward and failed to capitalise on 3 on 1 situations.
MoM - Ben Northedge for moving into the 4ths and giving everything he had to maintain a place - he impressed us all. the other contender was Chris Hubbard.
DoD- Due to his poor attempt to be like Phillips the only way he can ever be like Phillips are if he gains more weight, shaves his hair and harresses kids, so therfore, Deej, all you have to do now is shave your hair.
vs South Notts Lost 0-1
South Notts just had the upper hand in this fairly even game, thanks largely to two quite skilful and mature mid-fielders who just tipped the balance in the visitors' favour.
Chesterfield were unluckly not to equalise when an excellent through ball to Harry, who himself had made a good run into the circle, was directed just wide of the left post.
vs Sutton Coldfield (A) Lost 3-0
A disappointing result which has put paid to the Emerald Army's good run of results. Chesterfield never really got to grips with the fast bouncy water based pitch and created few chances from open play. Sutton went one up through a precision drag flick, following a very controversial short corner decision. Chesterfield failed to capitalise on numerous short corners of their own throughout the match, and Sutton's keeper pulled off a couple of great saves. Sutton grabbed a couple of late goals in the match as the away side pressed for that elusive strike but it wasnt to be. The travellers felt a little hard done by by certain umpiring decisions but in the end could not defend their poor form in front of the Sutton net.
vs Rugby (H) Drew 0-0
vs Belper (A) Drew 3-3 (C Cowley (2), A Phillips)
Chesterfield took on undefeated league leaders Belper at 11.30 am on their sand based pitch. The team’s chaotic arrival was partly due to Andy’s experimental method of departure. Our warm up also involved a spot of gardening to remove twigs from the pitch!
On push back Chesterfield was rocked in the first minute when the unmarked Belper center forward was gifted an easy goal. To their credit Chesterfield quickly settled and began to dominate the game. Chance after chance went begging until Chris Cowley finally put the ball in the net, 1-1. With J Cluer, Andy and Chris combining well we had further chances to go ahead. Instead it was Belper who took the lead when their penalty corner hit took a wicked deflection and flew into the roof of the net. The 2-1 half time score flattered the home team.
Belper then went 3-1 up when immediately on restart Chesterfield once again went to sleep and allowed the unmarked Belper forward space and time in front of goal. Even Hoops’ reflex save could not stop the ball trickling into the goal. Chesterfield then enjoyed a sustained spell of dominance. A brilliant short corner conversion by Andy Phillips left the Belper goalkeeper look geriatric (Andy has asked me to give him a good write up) and the score was 3-2. Doc after a strong run and a brilliant pass from Andy (well worth waiting for, better late than never etc.,) scored – only for the goal to be overruled by one of the home umpires who alleged a 3rd party infringement on the stranded goalkeeper. The elderly goalkeeper allegedly stated after the match that it was a long time that anybody had sat on him and even though it was Andy he actually enjoyed it and so no reason why the goal was disallowed! J Cluer told the umpire what he thought of his decision and immediately received a straight yellow card (10 minutes) for his troubles!
Surprisingly 10 men Chesterfield continued to dominate and Chris Cowley equalized after a dazzling run, 3-3. Two frustrated Belper midfielders questioned their home umpire’s decisions and received a green card each. Chesterfield created a series of half chances. Belper were unable to convert their short corners. The stalemate ended in a score draw.
Chesterfield remain mid table. Belper drop one place to second with a game
in hand.
Our thanks to the 2 home umpires who imposed their own style on the game. The
disallowed goal and the yellow/green cards were the subject of much
debate.
Man of match: Tony Bointon for expertly marshalling his defence.
****s of the match: J Cluer – a short fuse was his undoing. A Phillips
- played well in the number 10 shirt – a surprise selection for **** of

vs West Bridgford (H) Lost 4-1 (K Tann)
vs Burton 6 (A) Won 2-0 (C Marcus (2))
vs Edgbaston (H) Won 3-2 (A Clifford, A Bointon, D McCormick)
A battle in every sense this game was extremely hard fought between both sides, and was generally a scrappy affair. 1 a piece at half time following Clifford putting the home side ahead, the game was there to be won by both sides. Some excellent advantage by the experienced umpires allowed Chesterfield to take the lead once more through a Macca short corner special. Soon after this 2 Edgbaston players were sent off, one for a high stick, and the other for verbal diarrhoea. This enabled Chesterfield to score the eventual winner from Gene Hackman again following excellent from the umpires after Beardo's shoulder was literally put out of joint by a clumsy challenge. JB popped it back in himself a la Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon (Get well soon Beardo). Edgbaston pressed and scored a consolation but to no avail.
vs Sikh Union (A) FRIENDLY CANCELLED
vs Northampton Saints 3rds Won 11-0 (Nash 3, Walters 3, Cowley 2, Fonseca 1, Higginbottom 1 and Phillips 1)
The 3rds were an almost unchanged side for the first time this season. Mick Rowan Jr. was unavailable for personal reasons and was replaced by debutant Nash who turned out to be a 'super-sub'. After a 12:30 push back on a cold windy winter's day, Chesterfield immediately went on the attack. Constant pressure finally broke the deadlock midway through the first half through an excellent penalty corner flick by substitute Nash 1-0. Following a penetrating run by Craig, the loose ball at the top of the 'D' was despatched into goal by Ashley: 2-0. The 'Saints' then had the better of the last 10 minutes of the first half but were denied by Hoops in goal and some resolute housekeeping around his pads by our defence. A defining moment occurred at the end of the first half when the belligerent 'Saints' centre forward was sent off for compounding un-saintly behaviour by pretending to be member of RNID (Royal National Institute for Deaf and Hard of Hearing People)!
Chesterfield took advantage of the extra man when early in the 2nd half Doc in midfield received a through pass from Nash. On seeing the Red sea open up in front of him he continued his run to the penalty spot and then finished clinically 3-0. Nash then made it 4-0 with an exocet into the roof of the net.
A demoralised Saints were on their knees for the rest of the game in spite of parity in numbers. Chesterfield began passing the ball to the right with rich dividends. It began to rain goals. Andy made it 5-0. Chris Cowley (in his astro shoes) then scored a brilliant goal from a near zero angle 6-0. Craig them got into the act with a quick fire hat trick 9-0. Nash then completed his hat trick with another torpedo 10-0, before Chris Cowley completed the rout 11-0.
The Saints were sent marching on their way. Our excellent defence of Hoops in goal, Gary, Tony, Andy and Neil, denied them any hopes of a 'consolation' goal.
Our thanks to home umpire Mick Bloxham and his 'Saints' counterpart who worked well as a team helping each other to come to the right decision.
Man of the match – Craig Walters for his hard work and 3 goals. Chris was a close second.
**** Of the day – Saints centre forward. Polling booths had already closed when members found out that 'Dick' Walters had managed to get his car stuck in the almost empty St. Mary's car pack by parking on the grass verge!

vs Loughborough Town 5 (A) Lost 3-0
vs Mansfield Drew 3-3 (N Weaver, H Swift, B Northedge)
A dour battle between two local rivals. Mansfield did have a rather skilfull inside forward who perhaps ought to have been playing in a higher side and whose presence was significant in the home team not gaining the upper hand.
Chesterfield had many chances, and scored from 3, however, despite some good saves from the keeper, one or two defensive lapses let the opposition in for a similar tally.
Chesterfield were unfortunate not to have scored a 4th when neither umpire was sure that the ball hit Brendan's stick in the circle prior to cannoning high into the net off a Mansfield stick.
vs Shrewsbury (A) Won 2-1 (A Clifford, J Beardsley)
A tricky away fixture to begin the 2nd half of the season, Chesterfield began much the brighter side, on a very bobbly relaid pitch. Adam Clifford in particular lookied dangerous until he dribbled the ball onto a flat stick, a habit which he had lost towards the end of 2006. Despite this Shrewsbury won a controversial free hit outside the Chesterfield area on their first attack, despite Chris Julian winning the ball fairly, were then awarded a short corner for Chesterfield players not retreating 5 yards, despite not being able to hear the umpire's call in the wind, and the home side converted the corner to take the lead. The Emerald army continued on the offensive throughout the rest of the first half but could not finish off numerous short corners, and Rob Anderson failed to hit the biggest barn doors you have ever seen in a gobsmacking miss, bringing back memories of Ronnie Rosenthal's miss against Aston Villa in 1992.
Chesterfield continued to create chances in the 2nd half and eventually the away side scored through a goal scramble finished off by Adam Clifford. Chesterfield's 2nd soon followed after Hartley's only accurate pass of the game found Clifford on the edge of the Shrewsbury area. He then drove the ball to the bye line and squared it back to John Beardsley who slotted home under the sprawling keeper. The umpires had failed to impose themselves on the game throughout and this problem was highlighted when Druid Julian was munched from behind in a tackle reminiscent of a scene from Platoon. After a 5 minute stoppage no card was shown of any colour much to Chesterfield's disbelief. The final 5 minutes of the game was nervewracking for the away side as Shrewsbury pressed and created numerous chances following Chesterfields lack of composure. Despite this Matt Lloyd held firm in net, and the Emerald army held out for the valuable 3 points which takes them to the top of the league.
vs Sikh Union (H) Drew 2-2 (J Brocklehurst, A Glascott)
Vs Players 3rd (won 0-5, Andy Phillips 4, Mark Fonseca 1).
A lighter Chesterfield 3rd Team (having shed weight over Christmas) made the short trip to Beeston on a fine sunny day for a 4.30 push back. Tardy Spice Boy Craig Walters delayed the team’s departure but denied having to make a pit stop (or two) at the local Kebab shops. The 3rds were strengthened by the welcome return of Chris and Mick (Junior).
The team made good use of their early arrival with an excellent warm up. They went on the attack immediately after push back. An excellent run by Craig into the ‘D’ saw his shot being deflected into Andy’s path who slotted it into an open goal.1-0.
This was followed by sustained Players pressure – the attacks coming down their right flank. However some excellent defending by Gary Scott, Neil ‘Worsty’, and the ever reliable ‘Daisy’ and Tony kept the home team at Bay. Chesterfield was lucky to go 2-0 up when an attack involving Chris, Doc, Mick and Andy enabled Doc to push the ball in from close range. 2-0. Players continued to attack but were unable to convert pressure into goals by half time.
As Players pushed up their bid for a goal, the second half was more open. Chesterfield was able to attack at will. On one such attack they were awarded a penalty flick following an infringement near goal. Andy promptly scored his second (This man does not miss 6 flicks in a row!). 3-0.
The 4th and Andy’s hat trick goal came from a push from the most acute of angles. Chesterfield’s fifth was again scored by Andy with a shot into the roof of the net - the goalkeeper in no mans land.
Hoops in goal had a quiet day. Youngsters Tom Young, Ashley and Craig had solid performances. Mick Rowan Jr. brought welcome stability to midfield.
Throughout the game spectators were treated to some excellent sliding and ‘Didier Drogba’ diving by the speedy Chris Cowley. All donations to buy him a decent pair of astro shoes will be gratefully accepted by St Mary’s Sport’s Department.
Our thanks to the two home umpires who had an excellent game in windy conditions and poor visibility.
Chesterfield consolidate their mid table position.
Man of match: Andy’s well-taken quartet of goals deservedly won him the award. The excellent Chris Cowley who had a hand in all the goals was a close second.
**** Of the Day – Andy for taking all short corners (unsuccessfully), penalty flick (success at last) and allegedly hogging the ball in the D.

vs Beeston (H) Drew 1-1 (D Newman)
What was eventually a very evenly matched contest started with Beeston in control. They very quickly settled into an attacking display and a rather rash stick tackle from one of our defenders led to the award of a penalty corner. This was duly converted.
The loss of a goal seemed to settle the home team and they began to fight back. From then on, the result could have gone either way.
Just before the interval whistle, the home team were awarded a penalty corner. The first one resulted in a foul by a Beeston defender but the second produced the goal that Chesterfield deserved.
The second half saw plenty of attacking play in both halves. Matt made one particularly good save, but so did the Beeston 'keeper.
Honours even.
vs Derby Asterdale Won 3v1 (Taylor,Swift,Markus)
As this was the 1st league game back, we knew whatever our performance was, it will only improve in the forthcoming games. A win could have put us top so we played with a lot of energy and were often caught out at the back with just Bob and Marc defending. The 1st goal was scored by Callum; after this we continued to press and Harry got the 2nd - both of these goals were made by our using the wings.
In the 2nd half, Derby pushed forward and managed to score a goal from a short. Alex made some spectacular saves to make sure they didn't equalise. Brendan used himself as the feeder to the 2 wings and this gave Callum 1 on 1 with the keeper but he managed only to find his pads. In the last minute Mac hit a ball in hard and Callum deflected it towards the net but Chris Markus dived to touch the ball to ensure it went in (Callum says - just to steal his glory).
We may be top of the league depends on what Burton and West Bridgeford did.
vs Burton 3rds Won 6-1
Well in the style of the Doc, here I go on reporting the first game of 2007. Doc had done his usual and gone walkabout, unavailable again, the truth is he needed another week to get rid of all the left over chocolate and beer as it has been his life long ambition to be like Hunter.
Craig Walters was once more playing yo- yo with the second team, as he has done all season. Chris Cowley was down on paper to play but I think this is the closest we will get to him turning up for the 3rds. Sorry just had a phone call from Gary Scott saying he has spoke to Doc and he is having a Nap, Sack & Crack and is a little embarrassed.
You get the impression now that come Friday night you never know what the team will be until the whistle blows on Saturday as the 3rds have not had a regular side out since the start of the season.
Well as in true 3rd team style we were late, nothing to do with the navigation skills of Andy Phillips for once, so we got changed and went straight to it with no warm up, on a damp January Saturday morning in Derby. Tom Young made the big come back of 2007, Hop along Tann had been drafted up from the 4ths still on crutches and the man of the moment “look at my new Loughbourgh Tracksuit that Santa has got me” Hawketts all made it to play a fantastic game.
It must have been in the first 10 minutes when the first goal came from Chesterfield. We had settled the quicker and had made a number of attempts at goal and Burton’s new keeper was under pressure, however the goal came when Burton messed up a 16yard hit for Andy Phillips to take the ball of their defender and take it passed 2 player’s or was it 4 only to slip the ball to the goal hanger legended himself, Tann to slip it in, then as usually we went to rat s--- and lost all shape, which let Burton back in and score a poor goal.
At half time and a new chant, Chris Hooper donned his new Darth Maul helmet and we came out fighting. Was it a miracle or was it that we were starting to work as team, the ball was being moved around the park and we looked like the team of old and it showed, with goals coming from Tann, Ashley and finally Tom Young. I have forgot the last time we have scored this many the captain was crying 4-1 unbelievable, then Burton turned on the force field that protected their goal as 5 shots hit every part of the goal only for Tom to be robbed by Andy Phillips who eventually put the ball in the net. In the dying 5-minute’s and 3 short corners later Andy P switched the short corner to Chris Hawketts who buried the ball in the back of the net 6-1.
A big thank you to the RNIB for providing the two umpire’s “only Joking” it was a great game and played in Great Spirit.
Well that only leaves 2 things.
M-o-M- A well earned performance by Tom Young

vs Coventry North Warwicshire (A) Won 2-1 (A Clifford, D McCormick)
Coventry away has always been one of the tougher fixtures in the midlands premier calendar and so this hardfought game proved. The Coventry sweeper pulled most of the strings for the home side in the first half and initially had the beating of Adam Clifford. After the Chesterfield defence had weathered a few short corners and attacking moves, the Cov sweeper tried to take the ball round Clifford one too many times. Mixo stole the ball off him, as only a convict could do, and rounded the keeper nicely to give the Emerald army the lead. Chesterfield then went 2 up from a controversial short corner from the stick of captain Dave Maccormick, which some suggested was a shot taken from outside of the D. Early in the 2nd half Coventry pressed to good effect but Matt Meatloaf Taylor was equal to everything thrown at him. Chesterfield looked in no danger until Pat Evans was given the ball at the top of his own area and decided to turn into trouble. He then compounded his mistake by giving away a flick, and was left to consider which curry house he had left his brain in the previous evening. In the end a very satisfying victory which leaves us 1 point off the leaders at the halfway point of the season.
vs Mansfield (H) Drew 2-2 (R Anderson, D Molloy)
vs Burton (Away) 9th December Drew 1-1 (Josh Briggs)
The Chesterfield heavyweights made the 4 pm push back at Burton on a cold winters day with another new look side. Tom Knapp, 'Worsty', Marsden and Bointon were missing. Josh Briggs and Danny were drafted in to provide pace to our forward line. Craig Walters after 'an excellent performance for the 2nds' was dropped and played for the 3rds!
The highlight of the pre match trip was Craig gorging on a Donna kebab and doc venting his spleen on our short corner tactics – or lack of them. The pre-match ‘warm up’ included the customary 5-minute inspirational speech by our skipper (ex) and a few words from our new skipper.
Following a delayed push back, Chesterfield spent the next 20 minutes attacking a poor Burton side (2nd bottom of the table). Chances galore were missed as our forwards went for glory shots and lost their positional discipline. A sequence of short corners also went a begging. A 0-0 score at halftime was disappointing.
The second half saw a rejuvenated Burton side take the fight to Chesterfield. The home umpire awarded penalty corner after corner to the home side. However (skipper please note), the new look short corner defense of Doc, Gary, Andy and Gareth held firm with doc making some timely interceptions. Keeper Hoops was unbeatable. Besides making the normal bread and butter saves, one reflex save was inspirational and worth more than any 5-minute pre match rant! (If 'Anon' is dropped for the next match you now know why!!).
Against the run of play, a move involving Danny, Craig, Andy, Josh and Ash found Josh from close range (and showing his more experienced forwards how) placing a well-taken shot into goal. 0-1.
The Burton team having had no success from the dozen and more penalty corners that they had in the second half were awarding a debatable penalty by the home umpire. 1-1. A fair but disappointing result.
We thank Mr. Owen and the home umpire for officiating well in poor light.
Chesterfield are lucky to be mid table pre Christmas and must strengthen to avoid getting involved in a relegation dogfight.
Man of the Match: Skipper 'Hoops' who finally showed what he is capable of.
Dick of the day. 'Casanova' Craig for gorging himself pre match, hogging the ball during the match and helping himself to most of the post match chips.
vs Nottingham 5ths Lost 1-3 (J Hodgson)
The 4ths came up against the team promoted with them last season (and who then beat them on both occasions). Nottingham were a good team, particularly in midfield where they took control. They were vulnerable in defence and our 4ths certainly had opportunities to score more than their one goal - our young forwards failing to capitalise on one open goal chance and another excellent cross from the left wing. Phil was also unlucky to hit the post from one shot.
The home team felt that the short corner shot which resulted in Nottingham's first goal was too high, hitting Mick Rowan's knee en route into the goal. However, they kept pressing on though the departure of Phil due to injury did not help. Neil Briggs also aggravated a back injury which reduced his ability to drive forward.
There were many good signs in the 4ths display though. Kevin Tann caused the opposition many problems with his driving runs and heads did not drop despite going 3-0 down. Indeed once Chesterfield did manage to score, Nottingham were definitely on the back foot.
vs Derwent 4ths Won 14-1 (N. Drew(6) H.Swift(4) C.Taylor (2) Mac, B.Northedge)
An entertaining game for all. We took the lead through mac coverting a penalty flick they then equalised agaist the run of play. But then we settled into our domination of the game against a young and relatively inexperienced Derwent "occasional" side.
Nick, Callum and Harry got a goal each to take us 4-1 up at half time.
We used Brendan more in the 2nd half and scored 5 goals in the opening 10 minutes. Callum says he set up all the goals in this game but admits that not all credit should go to him as some breathtaking runs, shots and skills from Ben, Harry, Nick and Marc played well running up the pitch all the time and we played very much like a team.
I believe performances like that will help us win the league by a clear margine to secure `marvellous` Mac McCran's 2nd promotion in as many seasons.
Callum
vs Mansfield (H) Won 1-0 (A Bointon)
A match that will live long in the memory of all Chesterfield supporters and players. League leaders Mansfield arrived at Fortress St Mary's wearing suit and ties, and blasting out 'inspiring' music. However this only seemed to rile up the home side and right from the first whistle every tackle was fiercely contested. The home side welcomed Druid back into the side at sweeper which helped to tighten up the Emerald army's defence. Mansfield's tactics appeared to be to win a short corner on every attack but despite winning numerous PC's they coudln't find a way past Matt 'the mountain' Lloyd. Chesterfield soaked up a lot of pressure in the first half meaning the match was goalless at half time. As Mansfield began to press for an elusive goal in the 2nd half, cracks began to open up in their formation. Macca loped down the left wing to release Adam Clifford who crashed a ball into the D to find Bointon's stick for a deflection into the roof of the net. Chesterfield had 2 further glorious chances from Clifford and Charles Grant but couldn't convert them and in the end Mansfield were fortunate to lose by the single goal. The best team performance Chesterfield have played this season and a hugely satisfying win.
vs Coventry & North Warwickshire (A) Won 4-2 (Glascott 2, Molloy, Brocklehurst)
v Nottingham (H) 2nd December Lost 2-0
Chesterfield took on 2nd placed Nottingham on a mild autumn morning. Heavyweights Chris H and Gareth H opted for the 4ths. Josh Briggs was a late replacement for Craig Walters. Ash Higgenbottom and Danny Newman were recalled. 'Worsty', Gary, Tom Knapp, Tony Bointon and Andy Fisher made welcome returns. Rob 'spice boy' Marsden made a cameo appearance. Another new look team!
Jamie once again did the 'Scarlet Pimpernel' act.
Match and short corner defence tactics discussed during the warm up were turned upside down when the absent ‘skipper’ made last minute decrees.
Unlike the last game, the Chesterfield defence held the strong Nottingham attack at bay. A Tom Knapp/Andy Phillips run was the only note worthy attack of the first half. The score was 0-0 at the end of the first half. Notts however had a goal disallowed. To their credit the home umpires decision was respected with no dissent.
The second half continued with the home defence under constant pressure. As the 3rds tired ('Socialising' not fitness is our strongpoint), the Nottingham strikers often found themselves unmarked and earned a short corner. A mix up as to who was running out gave the striker an unchallenged hit – the ball going under Chris’s pads - 0-1.
Another attack and the Nottingham striker was floored in the circle. A theatrical dive deserving an Oscar was 'Worsty's' claim. The away umpire awarded a penalty for Neil’s blatant 'shove'. 0-2. Notts continued to attack. A goal line save from Gary Scott with Hoops in no mans land kept the score decent.
A poor performance from the 3rds. Only one attempt at goal, no short corners, an attack that fails to link with midfield, no width in attack, the defence under constant pressure …. I could rant on and on and on.
We thank Mr Owen and his Nottingham counterpart for officiating the game.
Man of the Match. No deserving candidate.
Dick of the day – none awarded as members stayed on to watch (and learn) from our 1st Team!!
vs Burton 4 (A) Won 4-3 (Tann 2, Palfreyman 2)
vs Beeston 9ths Won 3-1 (scorers- Nick Drew (2), Ben Northedge)
The 1st half was really competitive with the ball moving from d to d.We took the lead when Nick Drew slotted through the keepers pads. Beeston were catching us on the break but couldn't find the net despite many efforts. We broke and Nick was the only person in the d to hit the ball into the corner of the net for his second goal.
Beeston brought on a good strong player at half time to get back in the game and he helped as he scored their goal but overall, Beeston weren't as challenging this half. We maintained our pressure which saw Ben scramble the ball into the back of the net.
Note that Mac managed to muster all the strength he could to 'aerial' the ball 30 yards down the pitch and find Brendan's stick on two occasions.
Callum
vs Bridgnorth (H) Lost 3-1 (A Bointon)
Another toppish of the table clash began with Chesterfield doing the unthinkable and scoring first, with JRR Hartley sweeping the ball into the oppostion area for Clifford to deflect in. However the home side's lead didn't last for long and Bridgnorth equalised through a weak flick from a short corner which Matt Lloyd jumped over. Both sides had further chances throughout the first half, including a golden opportunity for Bucket to open his scoring account, but he choked from 2 yards out. Matt Lloyd pulled off some good one on one saves to partially redeem his earlier aberration. The 2nd half began with Bridgnorth continuing with their big through ball policy and they capitalised twice from Chesterfield's lack of discipline. Despite the visitors' going down to 9 men at one stage, the emerald army failed to breach the Bridgnorth defences and a disappointing run continues.
vs North Notts (A) Won 2-0 (A Glascott, D Molloy)
No game.
vs Nuneaton 4 (A) Won 4-1 (P Palfreyman, K Tann 2, C Walters)
The trip was more exciting! On the way there Tann wanted an eclair so Kay had to try and throw it from Craigs car into Tanns - the 1st attempt was unsuccessful as it hit the closed window but the 2nd attempt got straight through.
On the way back, Walters overtook someone but, as he did this, he failed to realise he went into a one way road. We wer going the wrong way so we had to wait for the road to clear until we could turn around!
Man of the match - Danny Newman played brilliantly to set up most goals and created space. Shame he didnt score, but he's confusing the opponents' defence with his pace
Dick of the day - Walters for his lack of ability to read road signs
vs West Bridgford 9 (H) Lost 3-0
Includes two reports from our intrepid trainee, Callum
vs Olton & West Warwickshire (A) = Drew 1-1 (A Bointon)
Olton are riding high in the Midlands Prem along with Chesterfield, so a bruising encounter was to be expected. The travelling emerald army failed to convert a number of chances in the first half and could not find the net with short corners. Chesterfield were finding the most basic of passing hard on a quick bouncy pitch. The home side punished Chesterfield through a well worked short corner of their own and they remained 1 up at half time. The 2nd half was a very cagey affair with both teams creating few chances but none were taken. Then in the 68th minute Chesterfield won a flick from a clumsy Olton challenge which Bointon duly converted. Despite late pressure from the home side the points were shared.
vs Loughborough Won 2-1 (Grant, Bryant)
The game started better than expected as Loughborough were top and looked a yound speedy team. But they failed to show this as our 2nds ran them ragged. Charles Grant managed to lob the floored keeper in a 1st half which the 2nds should have run away with. There was an injury to Lee Dyson's ankle which meant there would be no substitute. Loughboro scored in the 2nd half to put us under pressure - they looked much better in this half. However, we capitalised on the counter attack for us to score with 7 minutes left.
Callum
vs Warwick University. Score 0-8 (Scorers names awaited!)
The Chesterfield Heavyweights made to long trip to Warwick on a sunny November with a bare eleven. They welcomed Nick 'God' Kennerley back from a walking holiday in Pembrokeshire and Mr Bointon from a holiday in Tenerife. Ash was a late replacement for an injured Fisher and Gary was still on 'sick leave'. Jamie failed to turn up.
What a game! The ball was moved quickly from left to right – real end-to-end stuff! The midfield, full of running, bossed the game from their half. Forwards ran into space to receive passes made with great accuracy. Shots at goal finding the roof of the net. What more could a captain ask of his team?
Unfortunately the team in question was Warwick University. The first half was close - 2-0! The second half was a rout. Inept defending at short corners and loss of interest once we were 3-0 down did not help. The lethargic performance by some can only be attributed to the pints of lager consumed the previous days. Some team members even made 'good' use of the futile wait for Jamie Cluer by topping up with a further pint as part of their now customary pre-match hydration.
Were there any positives to take home?
Well, things can only get better! The score could have been worse! We were missing key players.
Man of the Match – you must be joking!
Dicks of the day – Take your pick. Choose between Jamie ('no show' act) or CW and GH 'drinking does not affect my performance' act.
vs West Bridgford 6 Won 2-0 (Tann, Kay)

vs vBurton 5 (A) = Drew 0-0
vs Harborne (H) Lost 2-3 (A Clifford (2))
Despite Harborne being towards the bottom of the table Chesterfield knew this would be a tough encounter and so it proved. In a scrappy first half the home side struggled to play their passing game, and despite numerous short corners failed to find the net. Harborne capitalised on early mistakes to go into half time 1 up from a controversial short routine in which a Harborne player appeared to chest the ball. In the 2nd half Chesterfield gradually improved and took the lead following good poaching finishes from Adam Clifford. From here on the umpires appeared to lose the plot and gave a soft short corner to the visitors which led to a flick that Matt Lloyd saved well. However soon after another soft short was given against the home side and Harborne levelled. Chesterfield decided to go all out for the winner and failed to finish many good chances, only for the visitors to clinch the winner on the break.
vs Jaguar Coventry (A) Won 4-2 (Cowley, D Molloy (2), Bryant)
vs Lichfield 3rds. Lost 1-2 (Andy Phillips)
The Heavyweights' stop-start season continued with a 1-2 home defeat on a cold and windy Remembrance Saturday. In the starting line up were Chris Hubbard (back from a 'fitness weekend' in Cardiff), Tom Knapp released from his RAF base, Jamie Cluer (back after a sabbatical of 2 years) and 'Worsty' (partially recovered hamstring). Tony Bointon (on holiday), Gary (dodgy hamstring) and Craig Walters (poached by the 2nds) were missing. Both Danny and Ash kept their places after impressive debuts.
The home team kept the visitors at bay with some resolute defending. We then took the lead when Gareth's powerful flick off a penalty corner squeezed past the goalkeeper's pads and trickled into the goal – Andy making sure it went over!
The visitors restored parity just before half time again via a short corner.
The second half was a bruising encounter with teammates going off with injuries but, to their credit, Chesterfield kept their composure and discipline. Lichfield scored their second off a penalty corner, the shot from an acute angle just evading 'Hoops' pads.
Thanks go to Chairman Gary and his Lichfield colleague for braving the elements and officiating the game.
Chesterfield remains 4th - as the mid table gets more and more congested.
vs Loughborough Lost 2-3 (Rowan, Palfreyman)
We got to the pitch and I was surprised to see Loughborough already warming up. Therefore, we new they would be ready for us - and they soon showed how eager they were by dominating the 1st 15 minutes. However, they then looked sluggish after that and quite often just caught us on the break. "Weaver" had an extremly good game and so did Mick Rowan.
I was disappointed by some of the umpiring - he let them play advantage but never gave us any sort of advantage. Along with this he managed to give out 2 green cards, 1 of which was maybe was a correct descion.
They went in at half time 2-0 up as we struggled to stop their speedy players breaking through. In the 2nd half ,we pulled a goal back. Kev Tann flicked the ball on to Mick Rowan who volleyed the ball into the net. They then scored another goal which should have been stopped by the keeper but in fairness the man should have been picked up earlier by our defence.
Our short corner routines are getting us the goals. When we're in trouble, Phil and Neil pull out a little trick which always works and did for us again today. As we tried to press forward in the late stages, Neil and their sweeper got into an argument from nothing and in fairness Neil shut up (probably because he only shouts at umpires) and their player used some terrible language but the umpires, rather than taking action, suddenly blew for the end of the game.
Callum
vs Belper 8ths Won 3 - 0 (A Higginbottom, B Northedge, H Swift)
vs Nottingham University (A) = Won 6-3 (J Beardsley (3), R Anderson, A Bointon, A Clifford)
Another patchy performance from the emerald army displaying what great hockey they are capable of in frustratinlgy short periods. In the first half Chesterfield were punished early on from fast attacking moves from their pacy forwards after gifting away possession in midfield, and soon found themselves 2 down. However they got back into the game as the half wore on through great finishing from John Beardsley after giving the keeper 'the old eyebrows' to leave the visitors 3-2 up at halftime. For a spell at the beginning of the 2nd half Chesterfield played what can only be described as liquid hockey and put the game out of Nottinghams reach. After this Chesterfield relaxed and played within themselves allowing Uni to score a late consolation, but the rampaging Beardsley even found the space to set Rob Anderson up for his first goal of the season. An early Xmas miracle!!!!
vs Melton Won 3-1. Scorers - Dyson, Glascott, Brocklehurst
vs Northampton Lions 3rds Won 2-1. (Andy Phillips, Craig Walters).
A lighter version of the Heavyweights made the long trip to Roade School Northampton on a sunny Autumn Saturday. A tough encounter was in prospect. The Lions in the past had shown that at home, they were no pussycats.
The 3rds had been shaken by last minute withdrawals. Heavyweight Chris H had to make the agonising choice between playing and an all expense paid weekend trip to watch the Wallabies in Cardiff. Spice boy Dan expected to make the trip under the able supervision of his dad could not turn up. Voda phone are still investigating why Hoops mobile failed to receive any incoming calls from the Molloy household.
Doc well tanned from his holiday made a welcome return in midfield but Sweeper Tony was missing (away on an off peak Saga holiday). ‘Worsty’ was still on sick leave.
Our ex-captain having read the clubs child abuse policy welcomed youngsters Ash Higgenbottom and Dan Newman in his now customary fashion. The 2 p.m pushback was delayed awaiting the arrival of one of the 2 home umpires.
True to form Chesterfield went 1-0 down when they gifted the Lions a goal off an innocuous penalty corner. To their credit they then settled down to some good and fighting hockey. Sweeper Gareth, debutants Ash and Danny and forward Mike Gregory were outstanding. ‘Daisy’ made some timely interceptions. The others put in their now customary efficient performances. Chesterfield equalised when Andy smashed in a rebound off the keeper’s pads into goal. 1-1 at half time.
Chesterfield continued to have the better chances in the second half coming close on many occasions with one gaol being disallowed. We finally scored off a short corner – Craig Walters smashing the rebound from an Andy P’s shot into goal. 1-2. This remained the final score with Chesterfield guilty off wasting golden opportunities.
Our thanks to the 2 home umpires. Keith has confirmed that any rumours of a player’s request to have the Lions female umpire for all future home games are totally inaccurate.
Post match, the spectators were treated to an acrobatic performance by maestro Mike.
Man of the match: Ash Higgenbottom for a sterling virgin performance on the field.
Dick of the Day: Craig Walters – active lobbying by AP and GH made this a one horse race.
‘Twats’ of the day – Dan (Molloy) and Chris Hubbard received a vote each.
vs Beeston 5 at home Draw 4-4 (Taylor, Markus, Cowley, Palfreyman)
On a bright Saturday afternoon the fourth team were looking to beat another strong team. In the first minute, those points looked likely as some good teamwork between Callum and Nick got us into their 'D'. Nick battered the ball at a Beeston foot and from the resulting short corner, the team looked to have messed things up - until Neil struck the ball hard to the back post where Callum deflected it into the air. Unfortunately the keeper got a touch to it, but as the ball was in the air, Callum volleyed it into the top of the net.
Beeston came back, firstly equalised and then took the lead. Chris Markus then equalised after a goal mouth scramble. In my opinion, we should have been given a flick but the umpire (quite rightly) determined that the Beeston defence and keeper in particular had attempted at all times to play the ball, without shielding it from the opposition.
In the second half, Beeston started in a very lively way and scored after seconds. However, after another 10 minutes or so, Chris Cowley managed to slot in a goal to pull us level. He used his trickery and pace to give us many more chances which we couldn't take. This cost us, as Beeston unfortunately then scored again.
With a minute to go, we were awarded a short corner which Phil calmly slotted home; in the last second Pingu pulled off a great save to help us salvage a point.
Man of the match ( to quote Callum) – 'All 23 people on the pitch commented on the youngster’s performance and said how brilliant he played. I think I heard somebody trying to poach him to play for Beeston 1st s after his awesome goal and breathtaking ball skills. The spectators were truly treated to this persons skill so therefore man of the match 'Callum Taylor' '

vs North Notts Won 2-1 Scorers Swift, Northedge
vs West Bridgford Won 4-2 (A. Clifford (2), A. Bointon, J. Beardsley)
[Green Card J Nash Yellow Card M Cluer]
A packed St Mary's Olympic Stadium were privileged to watch an enthralling encounter, containing more controversial incidents than a pool party with Michael Barrymore. Chesterfield began in their customary slow style and West Bridgford were soon 2 nil up, but the home side were fortunate the deficit wasn't more. Before half time the home side had pulled one back through John 'Sheringham' Beardsley but badly needed a moral boosting halftime talk from Coach Nash. The home side upped their effort in the 2nd period and began to outmuscle the visitors in some increasingly physical challenges. Adam Clifford then showed he had been studying pictures of barn doors as he found the net twice through deft deflections. Coach Nash then suffered a nasty head injury as he selfishly charged down an aerial with his ample proboscis, and despite an injured Matt Cluer returning to the pitch in his place, Chesterfield continued to dominate especially when Bridgford were reduced to 10 after the umpire located his yellow card. Chesterfield's fourth is an early goal of the season contender after great work from Clifford who decided to beat 3 men lying down and then layed Bointon off who rounded a further hapless defender and slotted home the clincher. Cluer then decided he missed the sidelines and mounted a West Bridgford player to receive his marching orders. A battle of a match but importantly a battle we won! Most vocal supporter award goes to Zimmer Oldfield whose Braveheart rallying cries were inspirational to all who heard them.
vs Warwick Uni (A) = Lost 3-0
vs Mansfield 3rds. Draw 1-1 (A. Phillips)
The Heavyweights looking to kick-start their season after a poor recent run took on their bottom placed neighbours on a dull autumn day.
The 3rds welcomed back their top scorer Tom Knapp, ‘young’ centre forward Andy, and spice boys Rob and Dan. Doc was ‘AWOL’ – half term family bonding in sunny Mallorca.
Unlike previous Derbies this turned out to be a good spirited and competitive game.
Chesterfield took the lead through an excellent goal from Andy Phillips. But the fitter and faster Mansfield always threatened to score. Once again Chesterfield were lucky to be 1-0 up at halftime.
The second half saw the Heavyweights tiring and giving away numerous penalty corners. Our normally reliable Irish import, burdened with a cold, was having an off day. His wicked deflection off a Mansfield Penalty corner into the top corner of the net gave Hoops no chance. 1-1.
Chesterfield held out for a draw, drop to 4th in the league and play Lions next.
Man of the Match: Tony Bointon – made the rest of our defence look geriatric.
Dick of the Day: Our ‘Irish Import’ for his superb deflection into OUR goal.
vs Belper 5 (A) = Won 2-1 (C. Cowley, P. Palf)
vs Barton 4 (H) = Won 2-1 (M Mcran, A Higginbottom)
vs Telford (A) Lost 3-2 (A Bointon, J Nash) GREEN CARD A Clifford
Telford were a strong outfit last season and we knew this would prove to be our sternest test this season. Despite losing 'Van der Ipredictariot' the drag flick specialist over the summer, the Telford side was full of running all over the pitch and combined together well. Despite starting slowly Chesterfield had the best of the first 10 minutes but could not capitalise on a number of golden chances, and were rocked by the facial injury to top scorer Bointon after a deflection into his chin, which meant he missed the rest of the half. Telford took the lead after consistent pressure on the Chesterfield goal and went into half time 1 ahead, with the umpires giving the visitors little to cheer. Early in the 2nd half Telford doubled their lead after the Chesterfield defence wilted in the late winter sun and this proved to be the decisive blow. The emerald army continued to battle though and got back into the game following a goalmouth scramble nicely sniffed out by Boints. Chesterfield began to chase the game leaving bigger gaps in their formation leading to a 3rd Telford goal, and Adam Clifford also picked up his compulsory green card for tenacious tackling back. Chesterfield clinched a 2nd consolation goal from an old skool Nashy drag scoop but couldn't find the equalizer. A disappointing result in the end but Chesterfield showed they can live with one of the strongest outfits in the league, and will be looking for revenge in the reverse fixture.
vs South Notts. Opposition Cancelled - Walk Over - 3-0 Win
vs Sutton Coldfield 3rds 2-2 (M. Fonseca, G Hunter)
The Chesterfield Heavyweights made the long trip to Sutton Coldfield's UCE ground on an early pleasant sunny autumn morning. With our handsome centre forward celebrating his 60th Birthday in Cheltenham (or was it his dads), Air Chief Tom on work commitments, ‘Worsty’ on medical leave and CW unavailable we had a new look Chesterfield side. We welcomed back heavyweight James K, speedy Chris C, and a young delinquent on an ASBO (who cannot be named for legal reasons and is referred to as ‘nipples’). Mike Gregory released by his agent from his break dancing commitments made a cameo appearance.
The new look Chesterfield side took time to settle down and was on the back foot for most of the 1st half. Our defence was finding it difficult to cope against the youthful and fitter Sutton Coldfield’s forwards.
To their credit Chesterfield made the best use of their chances. Doc on receiving a pass from ‘nipples’, dribbled into the ‘D’ and scored with a crisp shot. 1-0. Sutton Coldfield scored with a deflection at the far post. 1-1. A super drag flick by Hunter on the stroke of halftime meant Chesterfield were 2-1 at half time.
The second half found our midfield combining better and Chesterfield looking dangerous on the counterattack. Excellent goal keeping stopped Chris Cowley from scoring on at least 3 occasions. With the 2 home umpires favouring their team in 50 – 50 decisions, Sutton Coldfield equalised off a penalty corner. 2-2. Some timely interceptions by sweeper Tony preserved the deadlock.
In the end a fair result. Chesterfield remain 2nd in the league, with the chasing pack closing in.
Man of the Match – Chris Cowley - A spirited performance on the pitch.
Dick of the Day - ‘nipples’ – A ‘spirited’ performance (off the pitch) on Friday night.
vs Sutton Coldfield Lost 0-3
vs South Notts Lost 0-2
vs Sutton Coldfield Won 6-3 (A Bointon (2), J Beardsley (2), A Clifford, M Cluer) [YELLOW CARD = Pat Evans]
Chesterfield went 2 goals down following some poor defending and did well to battle back into the game leaving the score 2-2 at half time. The home side gave a much stronger performance in the 2nd half and even being reduced to 10 players following Pat Evans trademark 'up periscope' manoeuvre only seemed to galvanise the emerald army. Sutton Coldfield's keeper was unable to cope with the fluidity of the Chesterfield short corner routine leading to another pleasing victory.
vs Rugby 2 - 2. Scorers D Molloy, M Owens
Managed to squeeze a draw despite some unfortunate officiating.
vs Belper 3rds. Lost 3-5 ( Andy Phillips 2, Dyson 1).
The Chesterfield heavyweights played Belper 3rds on a cold autumn morning at St Mary’s. Lee and Nick made guest appearances.
The omens were not good.
True to form, the fitter, faster and organised Belper ran the Chesterfield 3rds ragged. Tremendous rearguard action and poor finishing made the contest competitive. Belper even missed a penalty stroke – the feeble and wide push failed to reach the goal line.
Belper finally scored of a penalty corner.0-1. But Chesterfield fought back with Andy reciprocating – the Belper goalkeeper badly positioned.1-1. Chesterfield then flattered to deceive by taking the lead. A true pass by Nick Kennerly chased down by veteran Doc, was passed to Tom Knapp for a tap in.2-1.
Then disaster. Veteran “Worsty” collapsed in a heap – dodgy hamstring! Belper soon equalised. Score: 2-2 at half time.
The 2nd half continued in the same vein. Our defence began to tire. No subs! A loss of concentration and fatigue saw Belper score thrice in 5 minutes. 2-5. To their credit Chesterfield continued to defend resolutely and took the fight to Belper managing to score once more through a crisp shot from Andy Phillips.
The final score of 3-5 was kind to Chesterfield but one could only think of what might have been if Chesterfield had stuck to their well tried and tested game plan.
With other results favourable, Chesterfield stays 2nd.
Our thanks to Mac and his Belper counterpart.
vs West Bridgford 2-3. Scorers Tann, Rowan(S).
The fourths was a very physical encounter with the opposition siding a team of adults with no youngsters and our team was a little unlucky not to squeeze a draw.
Match cancelled by opposition. Game forfeited. 3 points and 3 Goals For credited to Chesterfield.
vs Edgbaston Won 2-1 (Clifford, D. McCormick)
Traditionally a very tough away fixture, Chesterfield began slowly and the home side dominated a niggly first half which was not a great spectacle. Edgbaston went in at half time one up through a well taken deflection but failed to convert numerous other chances. In the second half Chesterfield competed much better and following a great move between the two Adams, Clifford put away the equalizer. Edgbaston then seemed to lose their heads (and hair) and following a uniquely worked short corner the unlikely figure of Macca stepped up to caress Chesterfields second. Edgbaston then pressed and were awarded a controversial flick by the umpire on the grassy knoll, but struck the cross bar after Matt Lloyd outsyked the taker by diving in completely the wrong direction. An historical 3 points as Chesterfield had never won on the Birmingham Uni water based pitched before.
(Friendly game)
Cancelled by Opposition.
vs Northampton Saints (A) Won 3-2 (Phillips, Knapp, Young)
The Chesterfield heavyweights (a bit lighter without the defensive skills of the ‘Guvnor’), on a sunny October morning made the long trip down the M1 to Northampton. For some reason the changing rooms were another 2 miles away from the hockey pitch. Was this a tactical ploy by Northampton Saints? Perhaps not – for spectators forced to view the sight of our ex-skipper in his ‘Lucky’ 06 Red briefs surely would have required immediate attendance at the A & E dept. of Northampton General hospital!
As in the previous game Chesterfield started sluggishly. However, this time they were punished by Northampton who went 1-0 within minutes, with goalkeeper Hoops helping a short corner on its way. With the youthful Joe 90 making some threatening solo runs down the right, Chesterfield gradually clawed their way back into the game. On one such foray, the ball reached Andy who promptly dispatched the ball into goal from close range, 1-1.
Then a lack of concentration in defence required ‘Worsty’ to make a goal line ‘Ashley Cole like save’. Umpire Keith did not appreciate this body save and rightly awarded the home team a penalty stroke. The stroke taker having read “My 101 tips on how to take a penalty stroke” by our ex-skipper missed! Chesterfield was lucky to be 1-1 at half time.
The second half started with both teams looking to take the lead. Chesterfield started strongly with their forwards ably supported by the midfield coming close on many occasions. It required a penalty corner to break the deadlock. Andy (no misprint this) injected. Air Chief Marshal Tom produced an Exocet, which shot inches past the poorly positioned goalkeeper, 1-2. Chesterfield then consolidated their lead when the fast improving Tom Young positioned at the far post tapped in the third goal, 1-3.
With 50-50 decisions being awarded to the home team, Chesterfield put themselves under pressure by conceding countless short corners. Committed and brave running by Gary Scott often blunted the strikers hit. Unfortunately a comical mix up caused Hoops and Worsty, to get involved in a romantic tangle near goal. While this was happening the Northampton forward finally managed to push his third attempt into goal, 2-3.
Chesterfield held out for a fighting 2-3 win. We are grateful to Keith and his counterpart for keeping control of a highly competitive game.
Man of the Match – Joe 90
**** Of the Match – Hoops for his ‘Honeymoon’ antics.
Match cancelled by opposition. Game forfeited. 3 points and 3 Goals For credited to Chesterfield.
vs Mansfield 5 (A) Won 5-4 (Drew 2, Bloxham 2, Fairweather)
vs Shrewsbury (H) Won 3-0 (A Bointon 3)
After a difficult run of friendly fixtures, the home side were chasing a confidence boosting start to their league campaign. Both teams cancelled each other out in a tight first half, but Chesterfield looked much more composed on the ball and were looking organised defensively which restricted Shrewsbury's forwards. The first 10 minutes of the 2nd half was Chesterfield's worst period with Shrewsbury carving out chances from sloppy passing from Pat Evans. After weathering this storm the home side began to get back into the match and after good link up play going forward, Adam Bointon bobbled a shot in the corner to put Chesterfield 1 up. Gaps then began to appear in Shrewsbury's formation and, following concerted pressure, Chesterfield won 2 penalty flicks which Bointon cooly converted. A great start to the season and the only let down was the lack of a jug behind the bar in the Brampton Manor - which meant Bointon couldn't celebrate his first hat trick since guest starring for Brookfield Community School 6th form girls' side.
vs Sikh Union (A) Won 3-1 (Glascott, Brocklehurst, Bryant)
vs Players Won 8-0 (Knapp 4, Phillips, Young, Hunter, Fonseca)
The Chesterfield Heavyweights (which included Hunter, Hubbard, Kay and Phillips) took on Players in their first East Midlands Premier League game. Cynics may say that Andy’s decision to give up the captaincy was inspirational. What was not debatable was the new captain’s inspirational decision to play Tom Knapp as a forward in Chris Hawkett’s absence.
On a bright sunny morning the young Players team quickly took control with some first touch passing and bright running. However against the run of play, Andy, free from the shackles of captaincy passed first time to Tom Knapp who opened his goal spree with an easy tap in. Any attempt for a fight back by Players quickly went up in smoke when the same combination helped Tom to a brilliant first half hat trick, sending Chesterfield 3-0 up at half time.
In the second half another quick counter attack and a brilliant solo run by Tom Knapp made it 4-0. With teenager Tom Young working hard on the right flank, the Players defence was being stretched. Neutrals could be forgiven for mistaking the sounds made by our rampaging forwards Hunter and Philips for the sounds of the thundering hooves of wildebeest echoing across the Serengeti plains!
"Worsty" and Gary Scott got into goal scoring positions – the young Players goalkeeper made the save. Forwards Andy Phillips, Tom Young and Gareth Hunter then got on the score sheets with Mark Fonseca making up the final tally via a short corner.
To their credit, Players 8-0 behind, continued to push forward in attempt to get a consolation goal. They were however thwarted by some excellent defending by Hoops in goal, Tony Bointon, Andy Fisher, Chris Hubbard and Gary Scott in defence.
The game was played in excellent spirit and well managed by MacCran and the away umpire.
vs Beeston 6 (A) Drew 0-0
Derby Asterdale (H) Won 3-0 (Drew, Fairweather, C Taylor)
