Chesterfield Hockey Club Junior Results / Match Reports

Under 11s/12s Burton March 18th

The Chesterfield Hockey club entered Two U11/12 teams in their recent tournament at Shobnall Leisure Centre, Burton on Sunday the 18th March 07. The two teams won their games against Matlock 2-0 and 3-1 but lost against a strong Burton side 3-0 and 3-1.

In blizzard conditions – snow and hailstones! - The performance of these gritty youngsters was encouraging.

Under 13s Burton March 4th

Just to keep you informed, the under 13s went to Burton on Sunday and started of brightly by taking a 2-1 lead agaist Belper who were expecting us to be as weak as before; but they scored a last minute equaliser which left one of Belper players walking off saying 'how did we draw agaist chesterfield'. We then played an average Burton side but lost 2-0 and, as the rain poured, our players got frustrated and lost 2-1 to Belper under 11s. Despite these results the team work is brilliant and Len and I could ask for no more - we are just lacking knowledge of the game and the ability to attack.

Callum Hiron got all three goals and they all came from counter attacks.

Under 11/12 Worksop College February 18th

The Chesterfield Hockey club 2 mini teams (under11/12) produced an excellent performance in their recent tournament at Worksop College. Off the six games played the team won 4, drew one and lost one. Using the simple tactic of defending in numbers and using quick counterattacks the teams were able to defeat stronger opposition in the form of Newark and Matlock. Their only narrow defeat was against a bigger and stronger Worksop mixed team 0-1 having missed golden opportunities to score.

Our 2 teams were made up from Luke Fonseca, Kirsty Fonseca, Beth Moores, Bradley Allen, Sam Sivett, Alex Parker, Jordan Smith, Rachel Turton, Matthew Harrison, Tom Farr, Martin Crompton, Callum Hiron and Jonathan Moores.

Under 13s Tournament at Belper October 29th

We set out having not yet won a game but were hoping for a change in fortunes.

We played Burton first and were humiliated, much to Les' displeasure, and as a result, he gave the team a good talking to. As we played silent hockey the next game when we played Belper girls, we livened things up and managed to draw the game 0-0. We then were brought back down to earth when playing Belper, being pummelled despite Tom making some awesome saves. We then had a game against Belper under 11s when, again, they dominated, and Tom made some more awesome saves. To finish things off we played North Notts and again lost heavily. We can only get better and have not scored any goals yet in both tournaments which is depressing to watch - but we have potential and just need to find it.

Cheers, Les, for being the team manager and helping sort things out.

Man of the tournament - Tom Walters, the keeper, for being awesome despite letting in 30 goals or more - he still made some of the best saves of the tournament.

Fool of the day - Me - for telling an under 13 player the meet time for under 16s - but he still managed to get to Belper just before the tournament started.

Under 13s at Buxton 26/11/06

U-13 TeamThe probability of our winning wasn't good as we had lost every game before today's encounters. We had fixtures against Belper boys under 13s, Belper boys under 11s, Belper girls under 14s and Buxton b. We new this would be a test of how far we've come and how strong our team spirit is.

At the beginning I was asked by Belper girls if they could use our 'keeper as we didn't have a game - so we accepted and he managed to concede only the 1 goal.

In our first game we defended well but the girls played great hockey and, as they had already beat us twice in previous tournaments, we new we couldn’t rush our paces. So we used space and moved around well and we scored a goal when Callum walked into the 'D' and hit a very powerful shot which went through the 'keeper's legs. We ended this game with strong defending and claimed our 1st victory and with this, our 2nd goal.

We played Belper under 11s and they had beaten us both times we played them previously. But with our confidence up, we took the lead as Callum hit the ball hard into the 'D' where Sam Unwin slapped the ball into the top of the net, Belper pressured us and the defence was torn open and the ball found the back of the net. Callum dashed up the pitch with seconds to go and exchanged passes with Aidan who played Callum through clear on goal. Callum tried to pass the ball to Gemma but unfortunately it was stopped on the line by a Belper leg. We got a penalty flick as the whistle went. Callum decided to take it and felt the pressure. If he scored, we would win a 2nd game. The fans watched on as did the players. He placed it to his left - it found the corner and we had won another game. Callum became top goal scorer.

The next game was our toughest test as they had beaten us by double figures in the last tournament. They started strongly forcing saves from Tom. We tried to attack on the counter but focussed on keeping a clean sheet. However, they managed to score from a tight angle. Ashley Gill produced some great defending to save it being any more; the 'keeper was also on fire, kicking the ball far into their half when needed. This match, the team produced a fine team performance and it showed how much we have developed. Jordan made a kamikaze tackle knocking out both the player and himself .

We wanted to finish strongly to prove our confidence wasn't lost. We played great hockey and pressured their defence as Callum struck the balls in hard but we couldn't get that touch. Gemma nearly scored from a short but instead she set up Sam for his 2nd . Aidan then scored and we still pushed for more.

I think the reasons for our success are

U-13 SupportersTHANKS AGAIN TO PARENTS, LEN FOR TAKING CHARGE AND IN MAKING THE PROBABILITY OF OUR TEAM WINNING HIGHER AND THE PLAYERS FOR COMING AND SHOWING HOW GOOD CHESTERFIELD HAVE BECOME.

Chesterfield under 16s v Belper under 16s Drew 1-1

We set out hoping to get a result at Belper with a very ‘old’ team - which was surprising as it was under 16s. Joe Scott rolled back the years to play for us but the main shock was that we didn’t have a manager as Nashy was hospitalized on the Saturday. So and Les and I were trying to sort things out on Saturday night and eventually, on Sunday morning, Les managed to get Gary Scott to do it (thanks, Gary !).

So we met at Brampton Manor - all 9 of us - with Marc deciding to tell us Harry is going to meet us there only after waiting 15 minutes for him. We would still have had only had 10 men as Ashley Styles didn’t turn up so Jonno asked to bring his brother’s mate and we were fine with that. I travelled in the same car as Gary Scott, Joe Scott and unfortunately Dan Molloy who, on the journey, decided he was going to strike the ball from short corners every time. It’s never taken me so long to get to Belper as it did on that journey - for some reason it seemed to take us ages.

We got to the pitch and to our delight, we saw Harry waiting for us with his Grandad. We got ready and Jonno turned up with his friend Chris who was only 12 but we were glad to see him. As a warm up Molloy made sure we practised short corners so as we had a ‘routine’. Some weren’t happy with Dan’s decision as he wasn’t the captain. However, we thought we could try it so Joe injected to me to stick stop and Dan hit or slapped to back post - something I thought Dan wouldn’t try in the match. Then came a surprise - we were told they could lend us a keeper’s kit so we all voted Ash to go in - to his displeasure! Fortunately for him, as he was going to get kitted up, a man called Jerry who nobody’d ever heard of, came and saved the day.

We started strongly, having most of the possession (well more like Dan Molloy having most possession). We changed our formation from a 1-3-3-3 as they were playing 4 in the middle, to a 3-4-3. Feeling confident, I played myself left mid, putting Jonno in centre mid with Dan. We were very strong and managed to get a short. Joe played it to me and I rolled it in to Dan who hit it in the air and it went wide. We then got another short so I asked Joe to play it to my open stick as I wanted to try something different. I set up to stick stop and Joe injected for me to slap it hard to the back post where Jonno ran in and deflected it into the net (which shows we do listen, Nashy). We kept the pressure on, building play on the left as I was left unmarked all that half, but Dan Molloy insisted he passed to …… Dan Molloy. At half time we were provided with drinks from our manager. We felt privileged and realised that we were playing well but need to get the ball in the net more as Belper were a very good team.

They proved they were good in the 2nd half by dominating. We were lucky to be 1-0 up as Belper couldn’t find the back of the net and our stand-in guest keeper made excellent saves to our delight. But eventually they managed to score and deserved it. Our heads went down, but then we battled hard to get a draw. Their umpire (who the fourths had had the previous day) told Jonno off a couple of times for protesting and swearing. On one occasion when Jonno lost the ball, he chased his man and made a crunching stick tackle which resulted in the umpire awarding him a yellow card. Therefore Jonno got the opportunity to face the fence and wash the team shirts to both his and his mum’s displeasure !

We did endure one stoppage during the game which was not the result of any offence – the umpire managed to catch a fly in the eye.

Man of the match - Jerry- for being awesome and making some fantastic saves and making sure Belper didn’t humiliate people such as Joe and Dan.

**** of the day- Take your pick between Dan for hogging the ball (but that’s what we expected), Jonno for getting sent off for an awful tackle and Ashley Styles for just not turning up.

Sunday 10th December

The under 11s won a tournament A and B teams finished 1st and 3rd respectivly. With there being 8 teams participating and as we only let in 1 goal in all, this shows our improvement.

It was so wet and cold last Sunday(10th December) I couldn’t really concentrate !!

It was really good to see so many youngsters turn up and they all got a game and played with great enthusiasm.

I don’t know the younger new ones so can't tell you who stood out?

Gemma was top scorer. The players that also play under 13s are starting to play really well together, with Sam and Gemma working well together and passing to each other for Gemma to score.

We lost only one game and that was 0-1.

There were a lot of teams - Belper x2, Buxton x2, Chapel and Matlock

Chesterfield had enough players present to make 2 teams and the penultimate match saw A versus B. There were so many players on the pitch that it confused the referee who eventually gave up!! Don’t know who won – too much cheating going on!!

Great support from the parents and relatives from Chesterfield as usual. And the game finished with a warm drink and Sausage cob in Morrison’s – and then to the pub!! ( No alcohol was consumed !!!!)
