Chesterfield Hockey Club organised a tournament for teams of boys from local Primary Schools after school on 28th November. Six schools competed, Brampton (2 teams), Brockwell, Spire, William Rhodes, Holymoorside and St. Mary's . The competition comprised two leagues where each team played each other team, one of 4 teams - Brampton A, Spire, William Rhodes and Brockwell, the other of the remaining 3 - Brampton B, Holymoorside and St. Mary's.
On a rather wet and cool winter’s evening, some excellent hockey was played by the youngsters, despite the weather. The Spectators braved the wet conditions to offer good support to their teams. In Group 1, Spire won all three games to qualify for the semi-finals as group winners; Brampton A also qualified as second in this group. St. Mary's headed Group 2, with Holymoorside second to join Brampton and Spire in the semis.
In the semi-finals, Spire triumphed 1-0 in a close encounter with Holymoorside whilst the St. Mary's and Brampton game ended in a goalless draw. The drawn semi-final had to be settled with a penalty shoot-out, won by Brampton.
The final again proved to be a close affair, ending 0-0 at full-time. Brampton triumphed in the subsequent penalty shoot-out.
Young helpers from the Club were assigned to each school team to help them with warming up exercises, and with assisting their teachers with coaching, all under the guidance of the Club’s senior coach, John Nash and assistant Mac Mcran.
Our picture shows the winning team from Brampton with their teacher, Liz.
The tournament was run by Chesterfield Hockey Club, holder of the “Club First” Accreditation by the English Hockey Association.
